Uruguay started this tournament amid a drought of goals and although they have scored twice against Bolivia and once against Paraguay in their two games last week, they still looked uncomfortable. up front, with sparse serve from Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani and no striker firing on all cylinders.

Colombia, too, appeared to have missed suspended midfielder general Juan Cuadrado and neither side showed much composure in a game characterized by stray passes and painfully slow transitions from behind.

The two teams were only able to shoot one shot on target between them in the first half, but things changed after the break as both teams started to lose their inhibitions and show up.

However, neither could find the breakthrough and after ending at zero the game went straight to a penalty shootout.

Colombia, who have won the title only once in 2001, will face the winner of the final quarter-final between Argentina and Ecuador on Saturday.

Host Brazil will face Peru in the other semi-final.

The final is scheduled for the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 10.
