VANCOUVER – With training camp over, the UBC Thunderbirds men’s hockey team is now focused on a renewed preseason tradition as the annual Captain’s Cup tournament, presented by the Vancouver Giants, kicks off this Friday September 17th.e as the T-Birds host Simon Fraser University at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Center.
Created in 2017, the Captain’s Cup promotes college hockey in the Lower Mainland while raising awareness of the WHL scholarship program, available to players entering the post-secondary institution of their choice.
What began as a three-team competition between UBC, SFU and Trinity Western University, the 2021 version of the Captain’s Cup has been expanded to include the University of Victoria and the University of the Island of Vancouver.
âThis tournament not only gives us good competition heading into our regular season, but it showcases the many high-level options for varsity hockey in BC,â said the UBC head coach. Sven Butenschon. âIt’s a great showcase of post-secondary options for WHL players, both to graduate from a well-respected university and to continue to advance their playing careers.
With a total of 11 matches, the tournament will close with the championship final on Saturday, October 9.e hosted at UBC.
T-Birds to open Canada West 2021-22 regular season on Friday, October 15e when they host the TWU Spartans.
