CHILLIWACK, BC – The UBC Thunderbirds swept their second straight tournament to start the 2021-22 golf season as the men’s and women’s teams clinched victories at the Fraser Valley Cascades Invitational which took place. held at the Chilliwack Golf Club.
First-year student Russell howlett followed his Monday round of 5 under par with a 3 under par 69 on Tuesday to win the men’s individual title by one stroke against Eli Greene of Fraser Valley, winning the first Canada West event of his career.
UBC Freshman Fellow Jean-Paul Kahlert also shot a 3-under-69 on Tuesday, helping the T-Birds get a 9-under-par team score in the second round to end the two-day tournament at 17 under, four shots ahead of Cascades , second.
T-Bird freshman Una Chou led the Thunderbirds in women with a score of 3 under par in two days, finishing second in the individual race, three strokes behind Sukriti Harjai of Victoria.
The ‘Birds were the only team in the women’s competition to finish in the red within 2, a seven-stroke margin of victory to secure their second tournament win in as many weeks.
Following her individual victory at last week’s Gail Moore Intercollegiate in Bellingham, Emilie Li had another exceptional tournament even ending with Sonja tang was third, 2 under par.
Both UBC teams return south of the border next week as they compete in the second Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament of the season, the Warrior Invitational, hosted by Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.
