SQUAMISH, BC – Canada West have a new men’s golf champion as the UBC Thunderbirds posted a 36-hole team score of 25 under par at Squamish Valley Golf Club.
Directed by Mackenzie bickell Under 65, the T-Birds finished 23 strokes ahead of second-place Fraser Valley on Tuesday, while Calgary and Victoria were tied for third, both one stroke behind the Cascades.
UBC freshman Russell howlett followed his first round 6 under par with a 1 under 71 on Tuesday, forcing a playoff with Ethan Banks of Calgary ultimately winning the individual title.
Bickell’s low score on Tuesday saw rookie T-Bird soar through the standings to tie for third with Fraser Valley’s Jackson Jacob.
Ethan de Graaf shot a 2-under-70 to finish 5-under for the tournament and a share of fifth place while At Dylan MacDonald 3-under 69 placed him in the top ten, tied for ninth.
Jean-Paul Kahlert finished 11e in the individual standings, 1 below par for the tournament as all five Thunderbirds finished in the red.
Much like their female counterparts, the T-Birds men’s team have won each of their four tournaments so far this season.
UBC will be looking to go five for five when it travels to Kelowna this Thanksgiving weekend for the UBCO Invitational at the Okanagan Golf Club.
