NEW YORK—Columbia Athletics will celebrate Black History Month by showcasing its current Black student-athletes with an ongoing virtual and social media campaign throughout February.
“We are thrilled and honored to celebrate the impact our Black student-athletes have made here at Columbia, on and off the field,” said Campbell Family Manager of Columbia, Intercollegiate Athletics. Pierre Pilling noted. “The accomplishments of our former black student-athletes have been significant in the history of Columbia University.”
Columbia’s #CUBlackExcellence social media campaign will focus on current Columbia student-athletes who have achieved excellence on and off the court and beyond Columbia. On February 1, Columbia will launch a promotional webpage at www.gocolumbialions.com that will feature graphics, photos, social media content, articles and videos. #CUBlackExcellence content will be posted on Columbia Athletics social media and will include graphics and social media posts. It will also include a recap of the historic African-American pioneers of Columbia Athletics. The first student-athlete profile will appear on Thursday.
Last year, Columbia Athletics celebrated Black History Month with a 17-part #CUTrailblazers series. Feature articles focused on individuals at Columbia who are pioneers in their sport or who were the first in history to achieve excellence in athletics at Columbia and beyond.
In 2021, Columbia Athletics announced the formation of a Diversity, Racial Justice, Equity and Inclusion Committee. The We Roar Together Committee is responsible for leading and developing programs dedicated to fostering a culture of inclusion by creating spaces for courageous conversations on topics of racial justice and human rights, d inclusion and anti-racism training, education, awareness and advocacy, and strengthen our recruitment and retention processes for underrepresented student-athletes, coaches and staff.
