Colombia opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Juan Cuadrado crossed from the right and found Luis Diaz all alone in the middle of the Brazilian penalty area.

The forward fired a powerful volley down the right side of goalkeeper Weverton and scored perhaps the best goal of the tournament.

Colombia then began to defend against a team from Brazil who barely stopped circling their penalty area. It looked like Colombia would be able to hold on, until Argentina referee Nestor Pitana’s knee kicked in. Pitana accidentally blocked a pass from Neymar about 10 yards in front of Colombia’s area in the 78th minute. .

Colombian defenders came to a standstill momentarily, but Brazil substitute Lucas Paqueta just moved the ball to left-back Renan Lodi and his cross found Roberto Firmino, whose tilted head beat Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina.

The Colombians initially refused to resume the game but Pitana, the referee of the 2018 World Cup final, confirmed Brazil’s goal.

Brazil kept up the pressure in the final minutes and found their reward in added time. Neymar took a corner and Casemiro scored the winner.

“They came towards us once and then stopped,” Casemiro said after the game. “It was our attack on their defense. Colombia are a strong team but, as the coach demands, we are very strong mentally. ”

The Colombian soccer federation on Thursday asked Copa America organizers to suspend Pitana, saying it had compromised the outcome by not stopping play before Firmino’s goal.

Brazil leads the group with nine points after three matches. Colombia have four out of four matches. Peru also has four points followed by Ecuador (3) and Venezuela (2). The four best teams advance to the elimination phase. Brazil will play their last group stage game against Ecuador on Sunday.
