“Birds fall on the Vikes in the season finale

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (4-3-1) trailed the conference champions University of Victoria Vikes (7-0-1) 5-1 at Wright Field in their final game of the Canada West season. The Vikes, four-time defending champions, will now host the U SPORTS National Championship starting November 3rd in Victoria.

“I’m very proud of all the athletes I’ve had the opportunity to coach,” UVic head coach Lynne Beecroft said after coaching her final regular season game during a busy career. “It was an honor to coach them and see what they did after they finished playing field hockey. I think we have like 13 doctors and physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, teachers… it’s so fantastic. That’s what they take out of the real world to be successful, that’s what I’m most proud of, I hope these athletes can do their best against whoever we face at the U SPORTS National Championship. This year has been a really good mix of young and old and it will be fun to watch.”

The visitors opened a 3-0 lead after the first quarter before Izzy Fraser answered for the Thunderbirds on a penalty corner in the 38e minute to reduce the deficit to two. Defending three-time national champion Vikes bounced back with two more goals in the final period to close out the regular season for Canada West.

UBC also honored five senior graduates in Izzy Fraser, Jillian Wallace, Miranda Yee, Kaileigh Chowand Alix Vanry for their outstanding contributions to blue and gold.
