The UBC Thunderbirds (1-0) picked up a 7-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Dinos to start their Canada West season decisively at the season opener in Victoria, BC. Thora Rae scored twice for the T-Birds, while Miranda Yee, Jordyn faiczak, Mikayla stelling, Kaileigh chow, and Izzy Fraser all found it behind the net in their first conference competition in nearly two years. First year bird Ishavel Sekhon earned his first career shutout after joining the National Under-17 Team Blue and Gold and Team British Columbia
UBC got their first corner of the day in the eighth minute, where it was served to Yee who buried him to put the Thunderbirds on the board. Two minutes later, the T-Birds struck again after the Calgary goalie was caught out of her net and they found themselves on the stick of Rae, who scored it for his first goal of the evening.
Calgary almost scored their first goal early in the second quarter when they got a corner kick, but the pass deflected the waiting Dino’s stick to soften the opportunity.
The next game after regaining possession, Faiczak escaped the pitch and made it 3-0 ‘Birds in the 18e minute. UBC found the back of the net in the second quarter as Stelling broke away from the Dinos’ defense to score his first goal and give the Thunderbirds a 4-0 lead at the half.
Calgary opened the second half with back-to-back corners but couldn’t convert as the Chow scored another goal for the Birds in scoring it. UBC took the lead once again thanks to Fraser, who scored on the run from the upper right center of the circle.
Rae capped the scoring with his second of the night to pin a 7-0 Thunderbirds victory.
The T-Birds are back on Saturday October 2sd, against the host of the University of Victoria Vikes at 11 a.m. PST to continue a busy Canada West tournament weekend.
